Ten Sly Piranhas- Orff Schulwerk instrument game
About this video
“10 Sly Piranhas” is an Orff Schulwerk lesson written by the amazing Josh Southard from Smoky Row Elementary in Carmel, IN. You can subscribe to his YouTube channel at this link: https://www.youtube.com/c/JoshSouthard . The book 10 Sly Piranhas was written by William Wise and illustrated by Victoria Chess.
This video was performed by third grade students at Boone Meadow Elementary under the direction of William C Doublestein. It is one of my favorite lessons and I repeat it every year with my third and fourth graders.
The Orff instruments are set up in C pentatonic (removing the B and both Fs) and students recite the following text while improvising, “One, two, three four five, once I caught a fish alive. Six, seven, eight nine ten, then I let him go again.” There are nine piranha actors, one hungry piranha, and one crocodile. The teacher accompanies with a broken bordun on the notes C and G, with an occasional A in there just for fun :)
