The Kindergarten Reel
“The Kindergarten Reel” is an introductory folk dance intended to help our youngest dancers first experience the longways set formation. While it can be performed by kindergartners, I’ve found it to be most successful with first graders, and for that reason I often call it “The First Grade Reel.” This dance can be found in the book Listen to the Mockingbird by The New England Dancing Masters, and the song “Kindergarten Reel” as recorded by NEDM or by Marion Rose on her album Step Lively can be used for accompaniment. The video below features students from Boone Meadow Elementary, led by their teacher William C Doublestein, during the 2018-2019 school year.
