Elementary Mallet Exercises to Prep Orff Schulwerk

For most of my career I’ve jumped into teaching Orff Schulwerk pieces before building in my students the basic mallet skills necessary for success. Now more than ever I believe in teaching one skills at a time and then building on those skills through repetition. This video shows how I process with my students playing with good technique, keeping a steady beat, connecting text to rhythm, improvising, and playing multiple parts at the same time. I begin using these exercises in second grade, and I’ve found that they increase my student’s skill and ability on mallet instruments substantially as they grow.
